“It’s a bird! It’s a plane!”  It's… a golf ball sailing lithely through the air at the Whitecourt Petroleum Association Oilmen's Golf Tournament, which was held at Whitecourt Golf club on Aug. 12 and 13. 

 It almost didn’t happen this year which would have broken a nearly four decade long tradition.  This year the Whitecourt Golf Course partnered with the Petroleum Association and made it happen.

It was another festive and wildly successful event that brought the community together at the Whitecourt Carlan Cup Jet Boat Race that was hosted by the Whitecourt Riverboat Association. 

This thunderous jet boat excitement began on Aug. 5  with a show and shine. Circuit races began on Aug. 6 and ended Aug. 7 in style with an awards ceremony. It’s not for the faint of heart; these boats are built for speeds reaching 130km/h. In a blink of an eye, they are gone, leaving churning waters and ringing ears in their wake. Like a flurry of horns signalling the harbinger of doom, the CF-18 Hornet is a force to be reckoned with. With the ear splitting clash of Titans that resounds through every fibre in the body, the supersonic blast of such a formidable war machine flying directly overhead at 1,000 km/h at just 300 feet is an experience like no other.
